Saidosho station

This western style wooden building was built in 1915 and still has the taste of the time it opened. Renovated Second Waiting Room is the place where people who moved in the area can make friends with residents and the hub of the group to promote local development.

Ita Tatekoro (Mine Shaft Turret)

Tagawa was the center of the largest coal mine in Japan, Chikuho coalfield. Ita Mine Shaft Turret was established in 1909. This is the only turret made of copper remained in Chikuho area and the largest scale vertical pit turret made in Meiji Era.

Nihon Entotsu (Smokestacks)

Together with the mine shaft turret, these smokestacks are the symbol of Tagawa. Their construction was completed in 1908. Both smokestacks are 45-meter tall and one of the largest sizes made in Meiji Era existing to this day.

Funao station

While the “black diamond” coal industry supported Tagawa, another industry supported the town was “white diamond” lime. This is the passenger railway going through the cement factory area that is still operating. The unstaffed station creates rural taste.

Soeda-machi Menbei Factory Outlet

You can observe the process of manufacturing Menbei crackers. Enjoy shopping and sample tasting at the store.

Tagawa Sangyo

This is a lime manufacturer established in 1924. The main product, lime plaster “Shirokabe” is widely used from cultural assets including Osaka Castle to general houses. The company has been enthusiastic to the innovative technical development in recent years. Please ask us in advance if you would like to visit there.

Nakamura Sangyo Bio Institute

With the main raw material, lime stones produced in Tagawa, the company produces soil improvement agent added with organic microorganisms without using any chemical agents. Itoda Gion Yamakasa

Traditional culture with more than 300 years of history. At the climactic stage, more than 10 yamakasa floats are gathered and illuminated in the sunset, creating mystical views. Held on the second Saturday and the following Sunday in May every year.

Kawawatari Jinkosai (River Crossing Festival)

Kanada Yamakasa Festival

Taller than 10-meter tall Yamakasa floats gather. Visitors enjoy competition of gorgeous decorative lighting displays and air of excitement. Held on the second Saturday and the following Sunday in October every year.

Kawasaki Panpaku

Kawasaki Panpaku (bread exhibition) is a big event held in the town of Kawasaki with more than 20,000 people attending. About 50 bakeries in and out of Fukuoka Prefecture come here and sell their original bread made from the town originated food materials. Every year, it is held around end of April.

Mt. Hiko in Soeda-machi

1,199 meters high, Approximately 6 hours for round trip
Huge size Japanese cedars including 1200 years old Onisugi are fostered with enormous strange and bizarre rocks in this mountain. It is one of the three great mountains for shugen (mountaineering asceticism) training in Japan.

Mt. Fukuchi in Fukuchi-machi

There are different courses for mountain climbing enjoyable to everybody from beginners to advanced climbers. Enjoy 360-degree panoramic scene from the top of the mountain.

Kawaradake in Kawara-machi

508 meters high, Approximately 2 hours for round trip
Kawaradake is comprised of 3 mountains formed with lime stones. Because of the production of lime stones, hikers can enter only San-no-take, the third mountain. There are rock-climbing course and family course.

Gyorakuen

When Sesshu, who was an artist and a monk, traveled around Kyushu, he made this old garden. It is designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty. Especially in the season of autumn leaves, many tourists visit here.

Hikosan Jingu (Mt. Hiko shrine)

Mt. Hiko is the spiritual mountain worshipped as a god’s mountain from old days. The enshrined deity is Ameno-oshihomimino-mikoto, the son of Japanese Goddess of the sun (Amaterasu-oomikami, Ise Shrine). He is worshipped as the guardian deity of agricultural production, mines, and factories as well as the god of good luck.

Tagawa-shi coal, history Museum

It locates at the vacant lot of Mitsui Tagawa Coal Mine’s Ita Vertical Pit, which used to be the largest scale coal mine in Chikuho region. The museum owns a large amount of Sakubei Yamamoto Collection, the first UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in Japan.

Tagawa locates in the center of Fukuoka Prefecture.

When you make a reservation, please note:

  • A child of elementary school age is charged as one person.
